How to achieve a minimal Mac setup

7 strategies for creating a calmer, more organized digital workspace.

Hello and Welcome!

Welcome back to The Digital Minimalist. Each week, I share actionable tips to stay productive in our cluttered and distracting world.

7 Strategies for Achieving a Minimalist Mac

Note that this is a summarized version of the original article, which you can read on our website here.

1. Simplify Your File Management

Implement the PARA method to categorize your files into Projects, Areas, Resources, and Archives.

Regularly clear your desktop and downloads, deleting unnecessary items or organizing them into these folders.

2. Declutter Your Dock

Keep only essential apps in your dock.

Empty the trash regularly, remove Launchpad (if you don’t use it), turn on automatic hiding, and customize app icons for a cohesive look.

3. Hide Menu Bar Items

Use an app like Bartender to hide less important menu bar items.

This replaces clutter with a simple menu that reveals items only when needed.

4. Organize Your Browser Tabs

Consider using Arc browser, which lets you organize your tabs into separate Spaces that match the PARA method: Projects, Areas, Resources, and Archive.

This provides a clear framework for managing your browser tabs and folders, rather than letting them become disorganized.

5. Set a (Dynamic) Minimalist Wallpaper

Equinox is a free Mac app that allows you to create dynamic wallpapers that changes with your system’s appearance.

This means you can use your favorite minimalist wallpapers and enjoy the dynamic feature.

6. Change Your Accent Color

Adjust your Mac’s accent color to graphite for a cleaner, more minimalist appearance.

Navigate to System Settings, search for “Accent,” and select graphite from the color options.

7. Use a Minimal Screensaver

The Fliqlo flip clock screensaver keeps your setup looking clean and functional even when your Mac is idle.

You can set up a hot corner to activate your screensaver before you leave your desk or take short breaks.
